A family of four Singaporeans were killed in a multi-vehicle road accident in Port Dickson, Malaysia, on Wednesday (3 January). Photos circulating online showed a Singapore-registered Honda Stream completely crushed by a tipper truck.

Port Dickson police chief Zainudin Ahmad told Yahoo News Singapore that three passengers of the Honda Stream died at the scene while the male driver died en route to the hospital. The deceased were identified in media reports as Maimunah Sapari, 51, Nur Amalina Rosli, 21, Dayana Sarah Rosli, 18, and Rosli Samad, 54.

Three other vehicles – a Perodua Myvi, a motorcycle and a Mercedes-Benz sports utility vehicle – were also involved in the crash. The police chief said that the motorcyclist and the drivers of the Malaysia-registered cars were not seriously injured in the accident.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman confirmed to Yahoo News Singapore that the four are family members. The spokesperson said, “MFA extends our deepest condolences to the family of the four Singaporeans who passed away in the tragic car accident at Port Dickson, Malaysia.

“The Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is in contact with the Malaysian authorities and is rendering the necessary consular assistance to the next-of-kin of the family.”

The 54-year-old lorry driver, who initially fled the scene, turned himself in at the Port Dickson police headquarters. The police intend to place him in remand for four days in order to assist with investigations, said the police chief.

According to Malaysian media reports, preliminary investigations revealed that the truck hit the motorcycle before skidding and hitting the three cars in the opposite lane. Viral video of the incident showed the truck barrelling through a busy intersection before colliding with multiple vehicles.
