SINGAPORE — Singapore powerlifter Farhanna Farid smashed her own deadlift world record at the Asian Classic Powerlifting Championships in Johor Bahru on Friday (15 December).

The 31-year-old lifted 203.5kg in her second attempt, then 208kg in her third try in the Under-52kg women's open category, improving on her previous world record of 203kg which was set at the World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships in Malta in June.

It was the latest record broken by the Singaporean, who has been a mainstay in the sport since becoming the first female Singapore athlete to win an overall international open-category gold medal in 2018.

While Farhanna's previous world mark was achieved while battling back pain, she tried to balance between preventing a relapse of her injury and giving her all for the world record at the Asian Championships.

"Breaking the world record never gets old for me and it always feels like more than just an individual achievement," she said.

"Leading up to (the competition), I was also busy with events related to the local powerlifting federation as well as coaching and making sure my own athletes had their best experience to date. I barely had time to think about my own competition - which was both a good and a bad thing."

Chloe Tang breaks world records in sub-junior division

Besides Farhanna, other Singapore powerlifters have also been breaking records at the Asian Championships, with 57 of them being sent by Powerlifting Singapore to take part in the competition.

ITE student Chloe Tang, 18, equalled her own overall world record for total lift in the women's U-57kg sub-junior division, as she lifted a total of 409.5kg on Monday. She also broke the world record for squat (160.5kg) as well as deadlift (174kg).

Three Asian records were also set by Singapore women powerlifters on Monday: Shermaine Yong (deadlift of 170.5kg in U-63kg sub junior), Faith Tan (deadlift at 147.5kg in U-47kg junior) and Chan Day Yun (deadlift of 183.5kg in U-57kg junior).
