Pizza parties? Thank you, next. Now, content creator Mayiduo is rewarding his staff with Rolex watches instead.

The 31-year-old, whose real name is Kelvin Tan, shared in an Instagram video that he spent $150,000 on seven Rolex watches for his staff to reward them for their hard work. He explained that employees at his interior design firm, SG Interior KJ, get a Rolex watch if they hit their targets.

“I feel that as a boss, profits must be shared. It doesn’t make sense for the boss to take all the profits. When the boss earns, the staff must earn as well,” Tan added.

The video showed his employees picking out their watches, and Tan got in on the action too. He remarked, “I should also reward myself, right?”

In the caption that accompanied the video, Tan wrote, “In this current age and time, if you are a boss who keeps all the profits for yourself, you will never go far. Take care of your team and your team will automatically take care of your business.”

Not a small sum for an SME

He admitted that the money isn’t a small sum for an SME like his, but he believes in “rewarding and sharing the profits with our people as a recognition of their hard work and contribution”.

The road to being a successful businessman wasn’t easy, though.

In an episode of the podcast R U Okay? last year, Tan recalled losing more than $200,000 in a business venture in 2015.

It was all the money he had on him.

He shared, “I actually sat at the staircase of my office in Singapore. I sat there and smoked for seven days. I reached office at 10am and I would sit there and chain smoke until like 5pm. Then I would go home,” he shared, adding that he was processing how to deal with the situation.

Tan turned things around by shifting the focus of his team to sales, and he spoke to his suppliers who allowed him to return the money he owed over time.
