SINGAPORE — A 40-year-old man was arrested on Sunday (14 April) for allegedly setting off fireworks near an Yishun HDB block last week.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a news release that it responded to the incident at 10.42pm on 9 April at Block 642 Yishun Street 61. No injuries were reported.

A short video of the fireworks was posted on short-form video platform TikTok, but has since been taken down.

The man was identified through ground enquiries and images from police cameras and closed-circuit television, the police said.

The man will be charged in court on 16 April with the offence of discharging dangerous fireworks. If found guilty, he faces a jail term of up to two years, a fine between $2,000 and $10,000, or both.

It is an offence to possess, sell, distribute or import dangerous fireworks in Singapore.

“The police have zero tolerance against acts that endanger the lives or safety of others as well as cause undue alarm to the public," said the SPF.

Past cases of illegal fireworks discharge

Four men were charged in the State Courts for separate cases of discharging dangerous fireworks on Deepavali in November 2018.

Of these four men, a 54-year-old father and his son were fined $5,000 in March 2019, after pleading guilty to discharging fireworks at Bukit Batok.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old man was also fined $5,000 for discharging fireworks in April 2019. He also served a three-week jail term for giving false information to the police.
