A Singaporean was killed and two others injured in a fatal car accident while on holiday in southern Iceland last Wednesday (4 April), said media reports.

According to Iceland Magazine, three 24-year-old Singaporeans – two men and a woman – were travelling outside the South Icelandic village of Vík when the driver lost control of the car, causing it to roll over “several times” before landing on the side of the road.

While the cause of the accident remains unclear, the report said that the vehicle appeared to be travelling at significant speed. According to the South Iceland police, all three were wearing seat belts at the time.

The driver suffered critical injuries and had to be airlifted by an Icelandic Coast Guard rescue helicopter to the National University Hospital in the country’s capital of Reykjavik, where he was pronounced dead.

The two other Singaporeans, who were not critically injured, were taken to the hospital via ambulance.

Yahoo News Singapore understands that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore has rendered consular assistance to the Singaporeans involved in the accident and their families.

Iceland Magazine said the incident was the fourth fatal road accident in South Iceland this year. All four have involved foreign nationals, three foreign travellers and one foreign national who lived in Iceland, it added.

Yahoo News Singapore has reached out to the South Iceland police for comment.

In January, a family of four Singaporeans were killed in a multi-vehicle road accident in Port Dickson, Malaysia.

In December alone, at least seven Singaporeans were killed in fatal traffic accidents overseas. On 22 December, a family was on the way to the Grand Canyon in Arizona when their sedan collided with a mini-van. Three out of the four family members in the vehicle were killed.
