How to beat the heat and stay cool in Singapore’s hot weather

Singapore's scorching summer can make us feel more irritable than usual, but thankfully, there are ways to work around the heat.

With temperatures in Singapore reaching as high as 35 degrees Celsius and feeling like 40 degrees Celsius, it can be tough to stay cool and keep your cool. Coupled with humidity and how it can cause our home to grow mould, destroy our leather and wooden goods, or cause our fittings to develop plaster bagworms –Singapore's scorching summer weather can make us feel more irritable than usual.

Lest we start venting our anger on others, here are some steps you can take to beat the heat.

1. Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration by carrying a water bottle and sipping it regularly, especially when outdoors or engaged in physical activities. With insulated water bottles, you can even add some ice and indulge in some ice-cold beverages – judicially, of course!

5. Stay indoors during peak hours

The hottest part of the day in Singapore is usually between 11am and 3pm. If possible, plan your outdoor activities during cooler times, such as early morning or late afternoon. During peak hours, stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces, such as shopping malls, libraries, cinemas, your home or office.

6. Make use of fans

Use electric or ceiling fans to circulate the air and create a cooling breeze indoors. Position the fans strategically to maximise their effectiveness, such as placing them near windows or open doors to draw in cooler air.
