Review: Oasia Hotel Downtown, an improved Club Room stay

One thing that struck me throughout was how friendly and warm every staff was.

It's hard to miss Oasia Hotel Downtown when you're in the vicinity of Tanjong Pagar, especially when it's a fire-engine-red skyscraper rising into the sky with plants and blooms adorning the exterior of the building. Easily one of the most eye-catching and interesting buildings in the world, it has won multiple architectural awards, including "Best Tall Building in the World" from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, and was even featured in the third season of HBO series Westworld.

We're curious to see how it's holding up after seven years (including two very tough years) in business, and the recent invite to check out their improved all-inclusive Club Stay experience gave us a chance to do exactly that.

New and improved Club experience focuses on wellness

There are four room types: Deluxe, Superior, Club and Suites. To maximise what the hotel can offer, go for Club Room and above, allowing access to the full strength of the amenities Oasia Hotel Downtown offers. That includes:

  • Exclusive access to Club Floor, Club Lounge and Infinity Pool on Level 21 (strictly for guests aged above 12 years old)

  • Complimentary breakfast at Club Lounge from 7 – 10am

  • Complimentary evening cocktails and canapés from 6 – 8pm

  • All-day non-alcoholic refreshments, barista-prepared coffee and light snacks with superfoods, gluten-free, lactose-free and other special dietary options.

  • Complimentary access to wellness activities, subject to slots availability

  • Complimentary 2 pieces of laundry per night (min. 2 nights’ stay, non-accumulated)

  • Complimentary early check-in or late check-out (for direct bookings)

  • Yoga mats can be found in all Club rooms, so guests can do some stretching in the comfort and privacy of their room as part of their wellness routine. Additionally, stretch bands, lightweights and skipping ropes are available on request, subject to availability.

The aforementioned upgrades to the Club experience include complimentary wellness programmes such as a 15-min neck massage and complimentary fitness classes to encourage guests to pause their hectic lifestyle. There's also an expanded menu at the Club Lounge consisting of superfoods and foods for different dietary needs.

Wanting to make full use of the wellness programme, I enrolled myself into the 15-min neck massage, as well as a session with Ripple Club, a spin class in the water, on the same day. It's almost easy to take for granted that these are perks that come with the room price, until you remember that not every hotel provides such perks.

Cocktail and canapes are served between 6-8pm, so it's perfect for those who prefer a light dinner and nightcap before winding down for the night.

Service was warm, which makes up for the apparent hardware ageing

One thing that struck me throughout was how friendly and warm every staff was. The small attention to detail is impressive, such as the club lounge remembering our coffee preferences by our second visit to the lounge.

Now, to the hardware part. Supposedly, no mechanical ventilation is needed for the hotel rooms or offices because of the open-sided sky gardens. But after a night's stay, I have to say that the hotel might need to look into more ventilation options. The rooms are clean and well-furnished but had a damp smell and feel. I wasn't sure if it was because of the cocooned feeling of being around plants that gave me that illusion, but one thing to note is that towels and swimsuits that were hung out did not dry overnight.

For business travellers who have to get work done during their stay, they can request for a workstation optimised with ergonomic features such as laptop risers, anti-glare desk lights and ergonomic chairs to elevate their work experience. These items are subject to availability.

It's also important to note that the glass panels of the toilet means that it's not a conducive hotel to share a room with someone you're not close to, as it turns completely transparent when the surrounding is dark and the lights are on, allowing your entire conduct in the toilet to be revealed.

In general, Oasia Hotel Downtown is a beautifully designed hotel in a prime area and situated conveniently right next to the MRT. It's worth a couple of days' stay to check it off your list.
