A Florida-based news reporter, Victoria Price, recently shared the unusual way she discovered she has a tumour; a viewer spotted her on TV and emailed in, having previously experienced a cancerous growth themselves.

Sharing the story on social media, Victoria told her Instagram followers that due to the coronavirus spread and work being busy, she'd neglected her own health a little. "As a journalist, it's been full throttle since the pandemic began. Never-ending shifts in a never-ending news cycle. Adjusting to remote workflows and in my case, taking on a new investigative role. We were covering the most important health story in a century, but my own health was the farthest thing from my mind..."

Victoria then explained that an email from a viewer changed everything – after said unnamed watcher spotted a lump on her neck. "Until a viewer emailed me last month. She saw a lump on my neck. Said it reminded her of her own. Hers was cancer. Turns out, mine is too. COVID created some diagnostic delays but I'll finally be undergoing surgery this Monday to remove the tumour, my thyroid, and a couple of the nearby lymph nodes. Doctor says it's spreading, but not too much, and we're hopeful this will be my first and last procedure."

She continued on to say how grateful she is to have received that email. "Had I never received that email, I never would have called my doctor. The cancer would have continued to spread. It's a scary and humbling thought. I will forever be thankful to the woman who went out of her way to email me, a total stranger. She had zero obligation to, but she did anyway. Talk about being on your side, huh?"

Since then, Victoria says she has been seen by a brilliant medical team and is hugely grateful for the outpouring of support she has received. Her latest post is a short video of her wearing a face mask outside Tampa General Hospital, ahead of surgery. She added the hashtag #CheckYourNeck to the clip, reminding others not to let regular at-home check-ups slip when life gets busy.

As well as staying on top of examining the lymph nodes in your neck (see here for great advice from University Hospitals Plymouth on how to do just that), it's important to check your breasts for any unusual lumps or bumps too, and should you spot anything, don't hesitate to book in with your GP.
