The sweater weather may give us a good reason to wear snuggly clothes but it may not be so much of a good news for our house—specifically, our walls and tiles that are highly prone to accumulating mould due to the excess moisture in the air.

What is mould?

Mould is a type of fungus found both indoors and outdoors that breaks down dead organic material. It can grow on a variety of surfaces, including food, walls, fabrics, and other organic materials, such as your leather bags and shoes.

Usually, it occurs in areas with high humidity, moisture, or water damage, such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and areas affected by floods or leaks.

Should I worry about mould?

Moulds reproduce by releasing spores into the air. When inhaled, it can potentially cause health problems for some people, particularly those with allergies or respiratory issues. Some moulds can also produce mycotoxins, which are toxic compounds that can cause illness in humans and animals.

How do I get rid of mould?

  1. Identify the source of moisture

As mould thrives in damp environments, it is important to identify and address the source of the moisture. This could be a leaky roof, a broken pipe, or poor ventilation.

  2. Wear protective gear

Before you begin cleaning, make sure to wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and a mask to prevent inhaling mould spores.

  3. Clean the affected area

Use a mould remover spray; a mixture of water and detergent; a solution of distilled white vinegar and water; or a baking soda paste, and a cleaning cloth to clean the mould off hard surfaces such as walls, floors, and tiles.

For porous surfaces like carpets or upholstery, it may be necessary to replace them. If the mould has spread to a large area, it may be best to hire a professional.

  4. Dry the area thoroughly

After cleaning, make sure to dry the affected area thoroughly to prevent the mould from coming back. Use a dehumidifier or fan to speed up the drying process.

How do I stop mould from spreading?

The best way to stop mould from spreading is to keep the area dry. Some steps you can take include: keeping humidity levels in your home below 60 per cent; fixing any leaks promptly; and increasing ventilation in areas prone to moisture such as bathrooms and kitchens.

But what about during the monsoon season and rainy days? Keeping your home well-ventilated and allowing fresh air to circulate in your home can help reduce moisture levels and prevent mould growth.

Otherwise, you can always use a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air. Just remember to empty the water tank regularly to prevent it from overflowing. It is also good to regularly clean your home to prevent mould growth.

However, if you have a severe mould problem or if you have health concerns related to mould exposure, it is best to seek professional help.
