Golden Globes Results 2021: 'The Crown' reigns over competition in TV categories

Netflix's blockbuster royal drama The Crown was dominant in the TV categories at last night's Golden Globes, winning four awards in total.

Peter Morgan's lavish show won Best Drama Series, while cast members Josh O'Connor, Emma Corrin and Gillian Anderson won acting prizes for their portrayals of Prince Charles, Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher respectively.

Notably, the only two of its six nominations The Crown didn't convert into wins were in categories where it was competing against itself.

Helena Bonham Carter missed out to Anderson in the Best Supporting Actress category, while leading lady Olivia Colman came up short to Corrin in Best Actress (Drama Series).

Corrin was surprised to win the award ahead of her co-star Colman and the hotly-tipped Jodie Comer for Killing Eve.

She thanked O'Connor — who she called her "prince charming" — and said Diana had taught her "compassion and empathy beyond anything I could ever imagine".

Certainly, her victory lays down the gauntlet for Kristen Stewart ahead of her performance as Diana in a movie biopic helmed by Chilean director Pablo Larrain, as well as Elizabeth Debicki — who is taking on the role in The Crown from season five.

O'Connor also offered some kind words to Corrin in his own speech, describing her as "extraordinary, talented, funny and a brilliant player of rock, paper, scissors".

The God's Own Country star also praised the rest of the A-list ensemble, saying that "every day working with you was a master class".

In interviews after their victories, several of the cast members commented on remarks made recently about the show by Prince Harry, who said it gives a "rough idea" of royal life.

Harry added: "I’m way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family or my wife or myself."

Corrin told Variety she was "incredibly grateful" and "moved" to hear that Prince Harry had watched the show and made kind comments about it.

Meanwhile, Anderson said Harry is "fairly well qualified to judge what is fact or fiction" when it comes to depictions of the royal family.

She added: "It was pleasing to hear that he understood what Peter was trying to do on The Crown. He's telling a nuanced story of the challenges of putting duty and service before love and family."

It was a good night for British talent across the board, with John Boyega winning an award for his work in Steve McQueen's Small Axe series and Rosamund Pike earning Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for I Care a Lot.

Daniel Kaluuya, meanwhile, won a Best Supporting Actor prize for his performance as Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah — but suffered a video call snafu.

Other big winners in the TV awards included The Queen's Gambit and Schitt's Creek, which earned two prizes each.

Over on the film side of things, Chloe Zhao made history as her movie Nomadland won two awards, while Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Soul also earned a pair of gongs from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
