As a subtropical volcanic island, towering mountains dominate about two-thirds of Taiwan. In fact, there are so many mountains in Taiwan that there is even a list of Taiwan’s Baiyue, or 100 peaks. The notable ones among these most worth-a-hike mountains are Hehuanshan or Mount Hehuan in Nantou and Hualien, and Taroko Mountain in Hualien.
Given the scale of the mountains in Taiwan, you can witness the sea of clouds flowing through the valleys from many high-altitude points. The scenery is made even more remarkable when you time your arrival at the viewing point to coincide with the sunrise or sunset — a landscape you can never find in an urban setting.
Most of us probably visit Taiwan for its delectable street food at the night markets. It’s time to add these scenic places – which include not just mountains, but also hot springs, lakes and waterfalls – to your itinerary for a change.
