By now, applying sunscreen should be part of your daily morning skincare routine. This good skincare practice should apply to all weather, including sunny, cloudy and gloomy days. So take it from a badly sunburnt victim like myself, and apply sunscreen even when you work from home. One of the biggest concerns about sun exposure, apart from enduring the pain of sunburnt and flaky skin, is the appearance of brown spots over time. And no, these speckles of brown spots, though cute as tiny freckles on the cheeks when we are young, may morph into the mottled skin we commonly see on the arms and faces of older people. And yes, these can appear on youthful skin, too, if we do not take care of our skin right now. With the launch of Cetaphil's Bright Healthy Radiance, specially catered for sensitive skins, Yahoo Life Singapore got in touch with Dr Jean Ho, a Specialist in Dermatology with over 20 years of experience, to share more about brown spots, prevention tips and how we can keep these pesky spots at bay.

Yahoo Life Singapore: What are brown spots? Are there any differences between age spots, brown spots or freckles?

Dr Jean Ho: Brown spots are used in a general manner to refer to various types of pigmentation on the face, be it freckles or age spots. Freckles are the light brown, small, uniformly sized spots that occur on the cheeks of young patients. They start to appear at puberty, slowly becoming more numerous with age.

Age spots refer to the dark brown, often circular-shaped patches that appear on the faces of older individuals. These are caused by long-term UV radiation and are accompanied by signs of skin ageing, such as dry skin, wrinkles, and an overall dull skin tone. Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation that is more common in women. Unlike freckles or age spots, melasma appears blotchier and may occur as large patches on the face. Melasma can be a source of emotional distress in patients who suffer from it.

Are there any methods to reverse brown spots?

Adopt the daily use of sunscreen to protect the skin from the effects of UV. A broad-spectrum sunscreen that shields against UV radiation and visible light is advisable. Visible light or blue light can also cause skin hyperpigmentation. Incorporate a daily skincare routine which contains gentle yet effective brightening ingredients that, in turn, prevent the formation of excessive melanin in the skin. Some of these include niacinamide and sea daffodil extract. Antioxidants like vitamins C and vitamin E mop up free radicals from environmental stressors such as solar radiation and pollution. Use a gentle exfoliating product to facilitate the renewal of the skin's outermost layer, which helps reduce brown spots and improve the overall skin tone.

Do brown spots occur on mature skins only?

Environmental and lifestyle factors can cause the premature appearance of brown spots and hyperpigmentation. Pollution, psychological stress, hormonal imbalance, and smoking are examples of factors which can adversely affect the skin.
