Roma vs Feyenoord - LIVE!

Roma won their first major European title in more than 60 years as Nicolo Zaniolo’s first-half goal earned the Italians a 1-0 victory over Feyenoord in the UEFA Europa Conference League final in Albania.

The 22-year-old Zaniolo steered the ball home in the 32nd minute with a left-footed flick, after first taking it down on his chest, to make Roma inaugural winners of European football’s new third-tier club competition.

Roma, whose only previous continental title was the old Fairs Cup in 1961, held off a spirited comeback from their Dutch opponents, who were twice denied by the woodwork in the second-half, and ensured that Jose Mourinho became the first manager to win a European trophy with four different clubs.

The Roma managed help up five fingers at the full-time whistle, making sure everyone was fully aware of the five continental titles in his trophy cabinet.

Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio made vital saves and Chris Smalling was immense at the back as Feyenoord took the game to the Italians, enjoying much of the possession, but the Serie A side on the whole managed the final well.

Match report

22:57 , Matt Verri

Nicolo Zaniolo’s first-half strike proved to be the winner as Roma beat Feyenoord 1-0 to become the inaugural Europa Conference League champions in Tirana.

In the fifth European final of Jose Mourinho’s career he extended his perfect record and in doing so became the first manager to win continental titles with four different clubs.

With just over 30 minutes gone, Zaniolo brought down the ball down in the box and finished from close range to put the Serie A side in front and that was enough to seal the club’s first European trophy since 1961.

Feyenoord went close to equalising, particularly at the start of the second-half when they hit the woodwork twice in quick succession, but Roma showed a real maturity as they managed their way to a trophy Mourinho described pre-match as his side’s Champions League.

Chris Smalling’s post-match reaction

22:45 , Matt Verri

“We knew how much it was going to mean for everyone at Roma.

“Everyone fought until the end. We dropped a bit deeper than we wanted to and everyone was fighting. Even when I first came to the club it was a long time since Roma had won a trophy.

“We knew how much it was going to mean to win something.”

Trophy lifted, celebrations well underway... apart from Mancini.

While his teammates jump around in delight, he’s still standing there trying to work out how to get the champagne bottle open and spraying.

More practice needed.

Who goes first up to collect their medal for Roma? Who do you think?

Mourinho leads the way of course. Going to be some reception for him and his player when they get back to Italy.

22:11 , Matt Verri

Guard of honour from the Roma players as Feyenoord go up to get their medals.

Dutch side gave it a good go and looked really good in possession all match - just didn’t have that clinical edge in front of goal and it’s cost them.

Five fingers from Mourinho

Europa Conference League - tick.

Europa League next up for Roma next season. That’s the challenge for the club now, as well as closing the gap to the Serie A leaders.

For now though, celebrations are the only thing on the menu!

Party in Rome tonight!

FT: Roma 1-0 Feyenoord

21:57 , Matt Verri

ROMA WIN THE EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE!

Mourinho has another continental title - and it was a textbook performance from his side. Right out of the Mourinho playbook.

Plenty of nice build-up from Feyenoord but the killer instinct was not there.

21:55 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: Roma have the ball at the right end of the pitch, launching it forward after the Feyenoord goalkeeper came up for a free-kick.

That’s a foul though and Feyenoord can come again. There’s still time... just.

21:53 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

Long ball lumped forward for Feyenoord, flicked on and and Linssen is there six-yards out... completely misses the ball.

Just swung at thin air.

21:52 , Matt Verri

90 mins: How much added time will we get? Got to imagine it will be at least five, there’s been a fair few stoppages.

Five it is. Will it be enough for Feyenoord?

21:49 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Just what Roma need from Abraham, running the channels and winning cheap free-kicks.

He does so right in front of Mourinho, who was ready to run onto the pitch if the referee didn’t blow his whistle.

21:47 , Matt Verri

85 mins: That was almost that!

Great run from Pellegrini, he’s played through and has the chance to finish it. Powerful strike is beaten away though.

Feyenoord look like a team that don’t have much left.

21:45 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Was there anything for more inevitable?

Patricio shown a yellow card for time-wasting as he takes an age over a goal-kick. Wouldn’t say that particularly livened him up either.

21:43 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Roma again looking to go to the corner - it still feels too early for that!

Dessers is through into the box, onto his left foot. Goes for goal, Smalling there once more to block. He’s been immense.

21:40 , Matt Verri

78 mins: No sign of a real charge from Feyenoord, Roma are managing this well. Mourinho will be very proud.

Roma getting plenty of bodies behind the ball and the Dutch side are struggling to find a way through.

21:37 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Long spell of possession for Feyenoord, they’re struggling to do much with it though. All being played short, they don’t want to cross it into the box.

Eventually they do, but Cristante is there to head away.

21:35 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Bijlow called into action for pretty much the first time in the match. Corner swung in, comes out to Pellegrini and he drills the ball back in... good save from the goalkeeper.

Roma are doing a great job of winning set-pieces cheaply, killing any flow in the game.

21:32 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Pellegrini holding the ball in the corner for Roma - he’s gone very early with that! Runs it out of play though and Feyenoord can bring it forwad again.

After a brilliant start to the half, they’ve slowed down in the last ten minutes or so.

21:29 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Ball lobbed over the top of the Feyenoord defence, Abraham gets on the end of it.

Shapes to shoot on the half-volley, gets a little shove from Senesi as he does so. Forces Abraham to slow down and he then slices it well over the bar.

21:28 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Roma corner, chance for them to ease some of the pressure they’ve been under. Cleared out for a throw-in.

Safe to say that the Italian side are in absolutely no rush to take it. Zalewski coming off for his side - he wants to stroll across the entire width of the pitch but the referee tells him to make a quick exit on that side.

21:24 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Nelson has to do better though, completely scuffs his shot when it came to him just inside the box. Deflected behind for yet another corner.

Smalling heads it away, and is then there to stop the cross coming in a second time. What a performance from the centre-back so far.

21:22 , Matt Verri

61 mins: How are Roma still in front?!

Smalling slips and Dessers is there to take advantage, until Ibanez comes from nowhere to slide in and block the shot.

Stand down, stand now. Dessers handled the ball anyway. Free-kick.

21:20 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Brilliant from Smalling!

Roma look so vulnerable from set-pieces. It’s worked short by Feyenoord and eventually the space opens up for a shot on the edge of the box. Kokcu denied by Smalling launched himself in the way.

21:18 , Matt Verri

56 mins: First-half was a cagey affair - nothing of the sort since the restart!

Chaos at both ends of the pitch. Only going to get more exciting too as this match goes on, with Feyenoord having to throw caution to the wind. Not that they’re being particularly reserved at the moment.

21:14 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Abraham gets pulled back as he looks to be clean through on goal, Senesi thought he was letting the ball run through to his goalkeeper.

Roma striker looked to pounce, got his arm pulled... tried to stay on his feet and then started appealing. He was definitely pulled back, could easily have been a red card. Feyenoord very lucky.

21:12 , Matt Verri

51 mins: STUNNING SAVE!

Feyenoord with a wonderful move, backheel lays it off for Malacia and he hammers the shot at goal from range. Patricio somehow tips it onto the bar.

Corner flicks across the face of goal, Dessers inches away from having a tap-in. Roma all over the place!

21:11 , Matt Verri

49 mins: VAR check over and second corner comes to nothing.

Early signs would suggest this could be a long 45 minutes for Roma as Feyenoord throw everything at them.

21:09 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Feyenoord straight on the attack and they have an early corner.

OFF THE POST! Mancini so nearly puts it into his own net. Til then from the rebound.. great save! Roma hanging on here.

VAR check for handball in the box...

Back underway!

21:06 , Matt Verri

Can Feyenoord find a way back into this? Time to find out!

21:02 , Matt Verri

Feyenoord with more possession, more shots, more shots on target... less goals.

Mourinho masterclass? Not sure we can say that quite yet but he’s got his side on course for European glory.

20:58 , Matt Verri

Everyone on the Roma benched really enjoyed that opening goal.

Well... almost everyone.

Only goal of the match so far...

20:53 , Matt Verri

HT: Roma 1-0 Feyenoord

20:50 , Matt Verri

Dutch side putting the pressure on in the final minutes of the half, but they go into the break behind.

Zaniolo’s goal has put Mourinho’s side in front after 45 minutes - not really the manager you want to be giving a lead in a big match.

Imagine Feyenoord will see lots of the ball int he second-half, they’ve got to be much better in attack though.

20:46 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Four minutes added on, Feyenoord finishing the off strongly.

Cross in, Patrico cleans absolutely everything out as he just about palms the ball away. Got more of Ibanez than anything else.

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Real chance for Feyenoord to break as they clear a Roma corner.

Senesi tries to slide a cute pass through to Malacia, way too much on it though and that will be a goal-kick. Wasted opportunity again.

20:42 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Kokcu tries his luck from distance, plenty of swerve on it. Patricio made a bit of a mess of gathering it but no Feyenoord players followed it in.

First shot on target for the Dutch side.

20:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Feyenoord have not got going at all since that goal, they could do with half-time now.

Karsdorp has so much space out on the right, cross swung it towards Abraham but too much on it. Should have done better.

20:37 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Corner curled in by Pellegrini, Smalling gets up well at the back post but his header floats harmlessly to Bijlow.

Feyenoord have been the better side for much of the half, but they’ve got to respond to that goal now.

Smalling and Dessers clash at the other end of the pitch, both sets of players briefly get involved. Mountain. Molehill. Pellergini earns a yellow card for his troubles.

20:35 , Matt Verri

35 mins: The goal has really got Roma going, Abraham bursting away down the left. Senesi does well to match him for pace and clear the danger.

Abraham urges the Roma fans behind that goal to make some more noise and they respond.

GOAL! Roma 1-0 Feyenoord | Nicolo Zaniolo 32’

20:33 , Matt Verri

ROMA TAKE THE LEAD!

Their first chance and Zaniolo makes no mistake! Brilliant cross in from deep, Trauner misjudges the flight and Zaniolo brings it down on his chest before flicking it over the goalkeeper. Lovely finish.

20:30 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Quick break from Feyenoord as Sinisterra brings it forward and beats a couple of challenges.

Played through to Dessers, cuts inside and goes for goal... deflected and loops up perfectly for Patricio to claim.

20:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Foul on Zalewski and Roma can send a long free-kick into the box. Plenty to aim at.

Not sure that was the plan though, as it flies over all of his teammates and straight through for the goalkeeper.

20:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: That will be an incredibly obvious yellow card. Trauner brings Abraham down on the halfway line, as the Roma striker knocks the ball past him - had to make the foul.

File under ‘taking one for the team’.

20:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: That’s better, Pellegrini very nearly palying Zaniolo through on goal. Just overhit the pass.

Halfway through the opening period - hasn’t been a chance to speak of yet.

20:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Lovely football from the Dutch side who continue to knock it around with real confidence.

Roma struggling to get a touch - their only success is coming when they win it back and counter quickly out wide.

20:21 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Soft free-kick for Feyenoord just inside the Roma half, up go the defenders.

Played short and worked wide to Nelson, he goes to beat Zalewski on the outside but the cross bounces back off the winger and out for a goal-kick.

20:19 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Roma do indeed have to make a change, Oliveira on to replace Mkhitaryan.

Not an ideal start for Mourinho’s side!

Cynical from Nelson to drag Zalewski to the ground as he tries to fly forward. Lucky to avoid a yellow.

20:16 , Matt Verri

15 mins: This is a chance for Roma though as Feyenoord lose the ball - Pellegrini driving forward.

Abraham makes the run to the left, Zaniolo to the right. Pass goes in the middle of the two of them.

Concern for Roma as Mkhitaryan goes down off the ball. He’s shaking his head, could be his night over already.

20:14 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Aursnes clips a cross into the box, Til has made the run to the far post but it sails over his head and rolls out of play.

Definitely Feyenoord who have started the better of the two, they look dangerous going forward.

20:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Game has settled down after a slightly frantic start.

Both sides getting time on the ball in defence, not much pressing going on in the early stages.

20:10 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Sinisterra tries to knock it past Mancini three or four times, on each occasion it looks like the Roma defender is pulling him back. Referee doesn’t think so.

Cross eventually comes in, straight at Patricio.

20:08 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Ball poked through towards Abraham, behind him and it runs all the way out to Karsdorp on the right.

He whips a great cross into the box, Pellegrini makes a good run to the back post but it’s just over his head. Roma growing into it, causing problems out wide.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Nelson and Dessers combine nicely on the edge of the box, heavy touch from Dessers though and the chance goes.

On-loan Arsenal man is on the right wing for Feyenoord but he’s taken up positions right in the middle of the pitch.

20:04 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Mourinho already arguing with someone - not sure whether it’s one of his own players or not!

Really confident start from Feyenoord, Roma sitting off and letting them have the ball. Won’t be easy to break down though.

20:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Challenges flying in early on, Feyenoord seeing pretty much all of the ball.

Karsdorp brings it forward for Roma and then topples to the ground in instalments. He gets the decision too.

KICK-OFF!

We are underway in the Europa Conference League final!

Here we go!

19:57 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch in Tirana.

Feyenoord seemingly trying to break the world record for flags waved, Roma fans happy to just hold up bits of card.

1-0 Feyenoord.

Almost time!

19:52 , Matt Verri

19:47 , Matt Verri

Eight wins, four draws, no defeats.

Plenty of talk about Mourinho and Roma in the build-up, but Feyenoord are yet to lose in the Europa Conference League this season.

They’re the underdogs tonight but have plenty of reasons to be confident.

Passports at the ready for West Ham

19:41 , Matt Verri

Tottenham and Leicester have had a taste of the Europa Conference League this season, with the Foxes getting to the last four.

West Ham will feature in the competition next season, after they finished seventh in the Premier League.

Another European tour on the cards for the Hammers?

Less than 30 minutes to go!

19:35 , Matt Verri

Kick-off fast approaching!

Match is taking place in Albania tonight, but there’s quite a crowd back in Rome too. Roma fans are right up for this, as you’d expect.

Going to be quite the Italian party if their side get the job tonight.

It’s that time of year!

19:27 , Matt Verri

This is of course the second of three European finals to finish the club season.

Last week, Eintracht Frankfurt were crowned Europa League champions after edging out Rangers on penalties in Seville.

Now it’s the turn of Roma and Feyenoord to take centre stage, before attention turns to Paris on Saturday night when Liverpool face Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Lots to look forward to!

Atmosphere building...

19:20 , Matt Verri

Players walked out an hour before kick-off, with the stadium only half full - still a serious noise!

Going to be a special atmosphere in Tirana, that is for sure.

Good luck message from the great man himself!

How Feyenoord reached the final...

19:07 , Matt Verri

Feyenoord won a thrilling semi-final first leg against Marseille at home, as they took a 3-2 lead into the reverse fixture.

A goalless draw was enough for the Dutch side to go through and earn a place in their first European final for 20 years.

Let’s focus on the highlights of the first leg, as there wasn’t much to shout about in France!

How Roma reached the final...

19:01 , Matt Verri

A 1-1 draw at the King Power saw the semi-final tie between Roma and Leicester all come down to 90 minutes in Italy.

Tammy Abraham scored in the 11th minute of the second leg and that was enough to send his side to Albania. Job. Done.

Here come the teams!

18:54 , Matt Verri

18:48 , Matt Verri

Mkhitaryan is fit to start for Roma and he comes in to replace Oliveira in the team. Abraham has 21 goals for the Italian side already this season - can he finish the campaign in style by adding to that tally?

Big news for Feyenoord is that goalkeeper and captain Bijlow is fit and he makes an immediate return to the starting XI. This will be Nelson’s final game before his loan spell ends at the club and he returns to Arsenal in the summer.

Feyenoord team

18:42 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Bijlow, Geertruida, Trauner, Senesi, Malacia, Til, Aursnen, Kokcu, Nelson, Dessers, Sinisterra

Subs: Cojocaru, Marciano, Jansen, Pedersen, Hendrix, Jahanbakhsh, Linssen, Sandler, Walemark, Hendriks, Toornstra, Hall

Roma team

18:36 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Patricio, Mancini, Smalling, Ibanez, Karsdorp, Cristante, Mkhitaryan, Pellegrini, Zalewski, Zaniolo, Abraham

Subs: Fuzato, Vina, Perez, Maitland-Niles, Shomurodov, Veretout, Kumbulla, Oliveira, Spinazzola, Bove, Afena-Gyan, El Shaarawy

Abraham rewarded for brave move

18:30 , Matt Verri

When Jose Mourinho was seeking to persuade Tammy Abraham to join Roma last summer, he offered him a straight choice between rain in London and sunshine in the Italian capital.

There are two things to note about this ultimatum. One is that, in typical Mourinho fashion, it was designed with only results in mind, conveniently ignoring the fact that, on average, Rome receives far more annual rainfall than London. The second is that the tale has been trotted out so many times, in so many interviews since, that it has rather lost its charm.

And yet with each retelling as the season has gone on, it has come to look more prophetic, the growing turbulence at Chelsea at odds with what, at least on a personal level, has been an unqualified success of a debut campaign at the Stadio Olimpico for Abraham, rewarding the gutsy decision to swap his home city for the eternal one in a £36million move.

Mourinho: This is our Champions League

18:15 , Matt Verri

Jose Mourinho insists the Europa Conference League is a big deal for Roma, even though clubs such as Tottenham earlier in the season seemed to treat it as more of an inconvenience.

“I am a manager with history and Roma are a big club,” Mourinho said.

“I felt a little bit of responsibility to try and make [the first edition of the tournament] a great competition. So, little by little, we went on to achieve our ambition of going as far as possible. Then, very proudly we saw that the two semi-finals were played in packed stadiums, with [a total of] 170,000 fans in attendance.

“The Conference League is our Champions League. That’s the level we’re at, the competition we’re playing in. The club hasn’t reached [an occasion] like this for a long time.”

Stage is set!

Prediction

18:01 , Matt Verri

Roma have been far from perfect under Mourinho’s watch but, given his record in finals, it’s impossible to look past him.

There’s likely to be very little between the sides, but Roma look set to edge it.

Roma to win, 2-1.

Feyenoord team news

17:53 , Matt Verri

Reiss Nelson, meanwhile, is the most eye-catching name for British audiences in the Feyenoord side and the Arsenal loanee will almost certainly start.

With Justin Bijlow in line for a potential immediate return from a foot injury, former Hibernian goalkeeper Ofir Marciano may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Roma team news

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is the only injury worry for Roma heading into the match.

Nicolo Zaniolo is expected to feature after recovering from his latest muscle injury, with Eldor Shomurodov the most likely to drop out. Elsewhere, it would not be a surprise to see Bryan Cristante brought in to replace Jordan Veretout.
