Trump news - live: Rand Paul and GOP face mockery for increasingly fractured Mar-a-Lago raid response

Donald Trump has called for the FBI return some documents of the documents seized in the search of his Mar-a-Lago home last week.

The former president made the demand in a Truth Social post on Sunday morning, claiming that some of the documents were protected under attorney-client privilege and thus should not have been seized in the first place.

It comes after a report claimed Mr Trump personally appealed to Attorney General Merrick Garland before the FBI warrant behind the raid at Mar-a-Lago was unsealed.

The same report from the New York Times said that a lawyer for Mr Trump had told the Department of Justice (DOJ) in June that all classified material at Mar-a-Lago had been returned.

Mr Trump’s team has contended that all of the documents he brought from the White House to Mar-a-Lago had been declassified - as the FBI warrant suggested he is under investigation for violating the Espionage Act.

FBI, DHS warn US law enforcement of threats after Trump search

09:15 , Andrew Naughtie

Two US federal agencies are warning of the potential for more attacks inspired by the anger of Donald Trump’s fans in response to the FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security jointly issued a memo to officials in both agencies warning that the likelihood of domestic extremist attacks on US soil has risen dramatically since last Monday’s raid. The former president is being investigated for illegal retention of classified materials.

Officials warn that “the FBI and DHS have observed an increase in violent threats posted on social media against federal officials and facilities,” and say that the surge can be attributed to the decision of the agency to “carry out a court-authorized search warrant in Palm Beach, Florida”.

Cheney in trouble while Palin eyes comeback

08:40 , Namita Singh

The Tuesday election in Wyoming and Alaska could relaunch the political career of a former Republican star while effectively ending the career of another.

Wyoming representative Liz Cheney is the vice chair of the House committee seeking the truth behind Donald Trump’s relentless efforts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election.

Mr Trump has made Ms Cheney’s ouster a top priority as he emphatically endorsed her main challenger, leaving her fighting to hold on to the House seat she has held for three terms.

Meanwhile in Alaska, Sarah Palin jumped on a vacancy in the state’s congressional delegation as a potential springboard back into elected office. A victory in Tuesdays special election to fill the remaining months of the late US representative Don Young’s term could send her to Washington as soon as next month.

Ms Palin, a former Alaska governor and the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, has been out of elected office for over a decade and hoping for a comeback with her insurgent brand of conservativism.

Trump keeps trying to divert attention to Obama over ‘nuclear’ records scandal — here’s why that doesn’t add up

08:20 , John Bowden

One of the many responses from Donald Trump to the unprecedented raid of his home is another unfounded conspiracy theory positing that Barack Obama took “millions” of documents from the White House when he left.

It’s factually untrue; the 44th president in fact has only obtained unclassified records from the National Archives (which is the legal process for doing so) for use in the development of his presidential library. No one at the National Archives or DOJ have insinuated that Mr Obama did anything remotely wrong.

Dive deep into the latest flailing attempt by Donald Trump and his team to offer alternative facts instead of addressing the issue at hand:

Republicans push to see affidavit justifying FBI raid of Trump’s home

07:46 , Namita Singh

Republicans have sought more details on the FBI’s raid of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.

They are seeking disclosure of the affidavit submitted by the agency that persuaded a federal judge into issuing a search warrant, arguing that it would show the raids had “due cause” and were “not just a fishing expedition”.

“I think a releasing the affidavit would help, at least that would confirm that there was justification for this raid,” Republican senator Mike Rounds told NBC.

“The Justice Department should ‘show that this was not just a fishing expedition, that they had due cause to go in and to do this, that they did exhaust all other means,” he said.

“And if they can’t do that, then we’ve got a serious problem on our hands.”

The statement comes as the search warrant released last week showed that Mr Trump had 11 sets of classified documents at his home, and that the Justice Department had probable cause to conduct the search based on possible Espionage Act violations.

Trump’s lawyer claims all investigations into him will be dropped if he says he won’t run in 2024

07:20 , John Bowden

An attorney on Donald Trump’s legal team claimed once again in a new interview that the Justice Department’s probe is aimed at stopping the former president from running for office in 2024, and that it would end if Mr Trump pledged to abstain from running.

There’s zero actual indication from the words or actions of the Justice Department that their investigation has anything to do with his campaigns, past or present, but the Trump team has latched onto that conspiracy, like many others, as they rage over the growing scandal which erupted on Monday.

“I’ve said it 100 times – if he's not leading in the polls – I've sat across from him, every time he gets frustrated I say to him, ‘Mr President, if you would like me to resolve all your litigation, you should announce that you are not running for office, and all of this will stop,’” the former president’s attorney Alina Habba told Real America’s Voice in an interview.

Trump asked Merrick Garland: ‘What can I do to reduce the heat?’ before FBI warrant was unsealed, report says

06:20 , John Bowden

An unnamed source tells The New York Times that Donald Trump attempted to reach out to Merrick Garland personally after the FBI raided his home.

In a message sent from a Trump ally to a top DOJ official, the ex-president reportedly questioned, “What can I do to reduce the heat?”

Many have speculated about the reasoning for the message, as Donald Trump has shown little actual interest in reducing the political firestorm that he kicked off last week by excoriating the Department of Justice for the raid.

ICYMI: Rand Paul mocked for call to repeal Espionage Act cited in Trump FBI warrant

04:20 , John Bowden

Kentucky Sen Rand Paul is under fire after he called for the Espionage Act, a controversial piece of legislation which has been used to punish whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning, to be repealed in response to the news that Donald Trump is being investigated for potentially violating it.

Many users pointed out that it was the first time the libertarian Kentuckian had ever mentioned the legislation on Twitter — and that the Act’s past use does not justify the mishandling of important government secrets, including information about nuclear technology that the Washington Post reported was among the documents the DOJ hoped to find at Mar-a-Lago.

Herschel Walker, the Trump-backed candidate in the Georgia Senate race whose campaign has been upturned by a cascade of embarrassing revelations, says in a new interview that he’s glad that Democrats are running ads about him threatening his ex-wife’s life.

In a bizarre interview with a right-wing podcaster, Mr Walker asserted that the anecdote of him threatening to shoot his then-wife makes him look like a “warrior”.

ICYMI: Trump demands FBI return documents to Mar-a-Lago

02:20 , John Bowden

Donald Trump is calling on the Justice Department to hand over some of the documents seized on Monday in a raid of his Mar-a-Lago resort and residence in Florida.

In a Truth Social post, the former president reacted to a Fox News report which stated on Saturday that the FBI had informed Mr Trump’s team following the raid that some of the documents they seized were protected under attorney-client privilige.

“Oh great! It has just been learned that the FBI, in its now famous raid of Mar-a-Lago, took boxes of privileged “attorney-client” material, and also “executive” privileged material, which they knowingly should not have taken. By copy of this TRUTH, I respectfully request that these documents be immediately returned to the location from which they were taken. Thank you!” wrote Mr Trump on Sunday.

ICYMI: Mar-a-Lago footage subpoenaed by DoJ sparks speculation Trump may still have some classified documents

01:20 , John Bowden

A new subpoena from the Justice Department is raising the question: Is the DOJ done retrieving potentially classified material from Mar-a-Lago?

The New York Times reports that investigators from the Justice Department subpoenaed video from a 60-day period “including views from outside the storage room” where the documents in question were being kept.

“According to a person briefed on the matter, the footage showed that, after one instance in which Justice Department officials were in contact with Mr. Trump’s team, boxes were moved in and out of the room,” the Times’s Maggie Haberman reported.

If true, it means that investigators could be on the lookout for further materials removed from the White House apparently without authorization.

John Bolton tears latest Trump documents defence to shreds

Monday 15 August 2022 00:20 , John Bowden

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton, one of the highest-ranking ex-officials in the Trump administration who had access to documents at the highest levels of classification, said on Sunday that allies of Donald Trump who claim that the ex-president issued a “standing order” to declassify any materials removed from the White House are lying.

Mr Bolton responded to the claim, raised by Kash Patel and others, in an interview with CBS’s Face the Nation.

”This is likely a lie,” he said. “I was never aware of any such order. Never heard of it. Never heard of it after I left. I have no reason to believe it exists.”

“Was this supposed order ever memorialized by the White House counsel? What about by the National Security Council? If so, where is it? And is [Trump] aware that declassifying leaves those documents open to [Freedom of Information Act] requests? It is also a huge logistical task that does not seem to have happened.”

Rick Scott joins Republicans in denigrating FBI after Mar-a-Lago raid

Sunday 14 August 2022 23:50 , John Bowden

Sen Rick Scott, a member of Senate GOP leadership, is joining the ranks of Trump supporters angry at the Justice Department for raiding the home of the former president to obtain illegally-retained classified materials.

In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Mr Scott wrote this week that “[t]he American people are justifiably alarmed by the conduct of your agencies”.

His comments come as other Republicans like Dan Crenshaw have complained that the GOP’s sudden intense criticism of the FBI makes the party look unserious.

Marjorie Taylor Greene goes on unhinged rant against Democrats

Sunday 14 August 2022 23:20 , John Bowden

Marjorie Taylor Greene has gone on another rant about her political enemies, and is now claiming that America is a “fallen country”.

Her rhetoric, posted online by a Democratic-aligned opposition research group, contrasts sharply with the four-year-plus insistence of Donald Trump that he “made America great again” during his presidency. Mr Trump famously also ran under the slogan “Keep America Great” in 2020.

Intel committee Democrat says he’s seen ‘no evidence’ Trump declassified docs at Mar-a-Lago

Sunday 14 August 2022 22:50 , John Bowden

Rep Adam Schiff, a Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, confirmed on Sunday that his panel has seen no evidence to support arguments from Donald Trump’s allies that he ordered the declassification of large amounts of documents that were seized from his home by FBI agents last week.

Mr Schiff threw cold water on the theory, which posits that a president cannot be investigated for illegal retention of classified materials because of the power of a president to order those documents declassified. Notably, former presidents do not have that same power.

Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat and 2020 candidate for president, wouldn’t say on Sunday whether she believes Donald Trump should be indicted for allegedly retaining classified information at Mar-a-Lago.

Ms Klobuchar told NBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Meet the Press that presidents do not rule unilaterally like a “king”, but didn’t answer specifically whether Attorney General Merrick Garland should seek an indictment if he believes there is enough evidence to prove that Mr Trump committed a crime.

ICYMI: Geraldo Rivera scorches Trump supporters for anti-FBI rhetoric

Sunday 14 August 2022 21:50 , John Bowden

Fox News personality Geraldo Rivera strongly criticised the response to the Mar-a-Lago raid from Donald Trump and his diehard supporters this week in a rare and scathing condemnation of the far-right that is rarely heard on the conservative network.

Mr Rivera appeared on the network this week after a man died following a shootout with FBI agents in Ohio, apparently after attempting to attack the agency’s local headquarters.

“I hope and pray that this is not related to Mar-a-Lago, because the vitriol and the tone of the rhetoric and the hatred being directed against the bureau by supporters, fringe supporters of the former president is very alarming,” Mr Rivera warned on Thursday.

“I’m not sure, the details of the Mar-a-Lago raid will eventually be revealed to us. We’ll know everything eventually. But to see this, this really visceral hatred directed at the FBI by people who believe that they are supporting the former president is really, really, very, very dangerous,” he said.

‘Who knows what could happen’: Aides fret that chaos of Jan 6 led to Mar-a-Lago raid

Sunday 14 August 2022 21:20 , John Bowden

Former aides to Donald Trump are privately (and in some cases, publicly) fretting about the possibility that Donald Trump may have exposed himself to criminal liability during the chaotic final days of his presidency.

One even told Politico’s Playbook newsletter that the tumultous end of the Trump presidency following the January 6 attack on Congres may have led to a sloppy transition that resulted in classified materials being boxed up and taken out of the White House improperly.

“If you only start packing with two days left to go, you’re just running low on time. … And if he’s the one just throwing things in boxes, who knows what could happen?” said the unnamed Trump aide.

Trump makes ominous warning of ‘great simmering anger'

Sunday 14 August 2022 20:50 , John Bowden

Donald Trump is back posting on Truth Social, still fuming over the FBI’s raid of his Mar-a-Lago resort and home in Florida last week. It’s since been reported that investigators sought illegally-retained classified materials, reportedly including documents that touched on nuclear topics.

In a “Truth” posted Sunday afternoon, the ex-president claimed that he had just left a gathering of his diehard supporters and warned of a “great simmering anger” amidst his base.

“Just left a large gathering of people and all they could talk about was the complete and total stranglehold that the Radical Left Democrats have over the DOJ & FBI. It shouldn’t be that way. Nobody goes after BLM, ANTIFA, or the rest, despite murder, beatings, and burning down large sections of cities, a very unfair double standard. They definitely won’t attack the home of a former Democrat President, nor should they. It is all so out of control, great simmering anger!” he wrote.

Monday’s raid at Mar-a-Lago by FBI agents hunting for illegally retained classified material, reportedly including documents related to nuclear topics, continues to be the biggest story in US politics. What is the Espionage Act that Trump is being investigated under?

Sunday 14 August 2022 18:00 , John Bowden

Donald Trump’s alleged unauthorized removal of classified material from the White House is officially being investigated as a potential breach of the Espionage Act, a World War I-era law that has been used by the US government to go after leakers and whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning.

‘Trump had a habit of grabbing intelligence documents,’ John Bolton says

Sunday 14 August 2022 13:00 , Gustaf Kilander

Former Trump National Security Advisor John Bolton has said that Donald Trump “had a habit of grabbing intelligence documents”.

“It worried people all the time,” he told NBC News.

“God knows what he did with it,” he added.

In 2017, Mr Trump had dinner with then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Mar-a-Lago with other club guests dining nearby.

When the dinner was interrupted by a missile test by North Korea, the leaders conferred on how to respond in full view of others.

Lawyer Mark Zaid told Reuters that “what we saw was Trump be so lax in security that he was having a sensitive meeting regarding a potential war topic where non-US government personnel could observe and photograph”.

“It would have been easy for someone to also have had a device that heard and recorded what Trump was saying as well,” he added.

Trump asked Merrick Garland: ‘What can I do to reduce the heat?’ before FBI warrant was unsealed, report says

Sunday 14 August 2022 10:30 , Gustaf Kilander

Donald Trump personally appealed to Attorney General Merrick Garland before the FBI warrant behind the raid at Mar-a-Lago was unsealed, a new report says.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said on Thursday that he had approved the search at Mar-a-Lago, and he implied that the Department of Justice (DOJ) wouldn’t have done so without attempting less intrusive actions first.

Just ahead of Mr Garland’s statement, an individual in the former president’s inner circle contacted a DOJ official to send a message from Mr Trump to Mr Garland, The New York Times reported.

The former president wanted the attorney general to be aware that people around the US were furious about the raid.

“The country is on fire,” Mr Trump is quoted as saying, according to the individual with knowledge of the message, according to The Times. “What can I do to reduce the heat?”

All the times Donald Trump has leaked classified information, including nuclear secrets

The FBI search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in connection with “classified nuclear documents” is not the former president’s first alleged run-in over confidential information.

On Monday, FBI agents conducted a multi-hour search at Mr Trump’s Palm Beach, Florida private residence.

Classified documents relating to nuclear weapons were among the items the FBI was looking for during their search of Mr Trump’s mansion, people familiar with the investigation told The Washington Post.

Former DOJ official says search warrant raises national security concerns

Sunday 14 August 2022 07:30 , Gustaf Kilander

A former Departmemt of Justice official has said that the search warrant executed by the FBI on Monday raises national security concerns.

Mary McCord told Reuters that “clearly they thought it was very serious to get these materials back into secured space”.

“Even just retention of highly classified documents in improper storage, particularly given Mar-a-Lago, the foreign visitors there and others who might have connections with foreign governments and foreign agents, creates a significant national security threat,” she added.

Ms McCord said she has seen no “plausible argument that [Donald Trump] had made a conscious decision about each one of these to declassify them before he left”.

A former US intelligence officer told the news agency: “It’s a nightmarish environment for a careful handling of highly classified information.”
