SMRT to do wide-scale audit, asks rail staff to own up to lapses: report
Rail operator SMRT has asked its staff to own up and admit to breaches in work procedures by 3 November with an assurance that they will not be penalised, reported The Straits Times.
Following this “amnesty period” which ends on Friday, the rail operator will carry out a wide-scale audit and inspection. Lapses found will be penalised. The amnesty was announced by SMRT a few days ago via an internal email, said The Straits Times.
Preliminary investigations into the causes of the massive MRT North-South Line disruption in early October revealed that quarterly maintenance works for the anti-flood system at Bishan MRT were not conducted, said SMRT in a statement on 31 October. The 7 October disruption affected some 250,000 commuters.
The manager and staff responsible for the maintenance of the Bishan anti-flood system have been suspended and are assisting in investigations, said SMRT.
The Land Transport Authority also said that it would be independently evaluating the train operator’s findings and will boost checks on SMRT’s maintenance audit and inspection regime.
