SINGAPORE — The SBS Transit employee who rescued a young boy from falling over an escalator at Sixth Avenue MRT station last month has been awarded the Community Lifesaver Award from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

In a Facebook post on Friday (4 October), SCDF said that Mohamed Ferdaus Mohamed Yusoff, 39, received the award from First SCDF Division Commander Colonel Lim Boon Hwee, for his quick-thinking and timely intervention.

The incident took place on 24 September at about 6.40pm, when commuters at the MRT station saw a boy hanging off an upward-moving escalator, with one arm and one leg dangling out.

Upon hearing the commotion, Ferdaus – a senior assistant station manager with SBS Transit – sprinted up the escalator, reached out and pull the child over the handrail with one hand.

As he was rescuing the boy, he lost his balance but he cradled the boy safely as he fell, taking the impact and injuring his knee in the process. He sought medical attention after the incident.

According to SCDF’s Facebook post, Ferdaus kept the incident to himself and shared it with his family members only when articles about the incident started appearing in the media.

"SBS Transit is very proud of Ferdaus," senior vice-president of corporate communications Tammy Tan had told The Straits Times.

"He had displayed great courage and selflessness, and his swift action averted what could have been a very tragic accident.”
