Red Dot United restructures CEC, will remain engaged in Jurong GRC
SINGAPORE — More than two weeks after the General Election, fledgling opposition party Red Dot United (RDU) has restructured its central executive council with a view to staying engaged on the ground.
Nicholas Tang, a 28-year-old legal engineer and an RDU candidate in GE2020, has been appointed as CEC Member (Organising). “With this appointment, Mr Tang is effectively the Organising Secretary of RDU and will share leadership responsibilities with me and our Chairman, Ms Michelle Lee,” said RDU’s secretary-general Ravi Philemon on Monday (27 July).
In addition, Alec Tok will spearhead RDU’s fundraising efforts, while Liyana Dhamirah will head its welfare department.
Less than a month after RDU was officially formed, its five CEC members contested Jurong GRC, taking on the People’s Action Party team led by Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam. They garnered just over a quarter of votes in the GRC.
Philemon added that RDU plans to stay engaged in Jurong, with all five candidates – alongside volunteers – starting outreach work in the constituency from mid-August onwards.
On a national level, RDU plans to hold regular discussions and forums on pertinent issues that affect political, economic and social life in Singapore. One of its first post-GE2020 forums, to be held in September, will be on the topic of free and fair elections, focusing on how the nature of elections in Singapore has changed over its history and constructive suggestions to move towards a better system of representative democracy for Singapore.
RDU was formed by Lee and Philemon after the former Progress Singapore Party (PSP) members left PSP abruptly earlier in 2020.
