Barack Obama shared a Nelson Mandela quote following violent clashes at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The former president tweeted:

This glimmer of hope was exactly what Twitter needed to hear following the events that horrified the world, and quickly become the third most liked tweet in history with over 2M likes and 920K RTs.

A number of celebrities took to Twitter to express their outrage, particularly in response to President Trump, who refused to single out the alt-right movement, instead condemning violence "on all sides".

Three people died and many more been injured after far-right and neo-Nazi groups gathered on Saturday.

There were several hundred counter-protestors marching against the racist rally, when a car drove into them at speed, killing a 32-year-old woman.

Two police officers were killed when their helicopter, which was monitoring events, crashed.
