NTUC chief Ng Chee Meng, Aljunied GRC candidate Victor Lye co-opted into PAP's CEC
SINGAPORE — The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) announced on Thursday (19 November) that it has co-opted four new members into its central executive committee (CEC), including two non-Members of Parliament (MP): Ng Chee Meng and Victor Lye.
Ng, who is the secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), led the team that lost to the Workers’ Party (WP) in Sengkang GRC in the general elections held in July (GE2020).
Lye lost to the WP in GE2015 and GE2020 while contesting as a PAP candidate for Aljunied GRC.
The other two members joining the 36th CEC are Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC MP Alex Yam.
Key fourth-generation Cabinet members Education Minister Lawrence Wong – who also co-chairs the COVID-19 multi-ministry taskforce – and National Development Minister Desmond Lee were elected without being co-opted into the top decision-making body earlier this month.
Ten Cabinet members were also re-elected to the party’s CEC on 8 November, including the PAP’s incumbent secretary-general Lee Hsien Loong, first assistant secretary-general Heng Swee Keat and chairman Gan Kim Yong, who co-chairs the COVID-19 taskforce, and vice-chairman Masagos Zulkifli.
Also co-opted on the same day were 35th CEC members: Manpower Minister Josephine Teo and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah.
