‘It literally smells so bad’: Parents stunned to discover washing machine filter needs to be cleaned monthly

A TikToker has gone viral for her shocking washing machine discovery — and parents everywhere are running to their laundry room to check theirs!

When Edith Grey, known on TikTok as @edi.grey, posted her startling video online, she never expected it to amass over 10M views, or 1.4M likes — but it’s no wonder why the footage went viral!

Don’t wait until fall to buy these 3 FP Movement styles — they’ll sell out before then

“So I saw on TikTok people cleaning their filter pumps, or whatever? Their filters for their washers?” Edith begins her video.

“I just Googled, and apparently you’re supposed to do this monthly? I think my boyfriend has owned this house for eight years, and he’s never done it. I’ve lived here for three, and I’ve never done it. I can safely tell you this washer has never been cleaned,” she goes on to say.

Edith then begins removing the filter, a bowl and towel at the ready beneath the opening.

“Water started coming out, and it literally smells so bad. I can’t even describe it. Ooh, no, no, no no!” she shrieks as she pulls out the filter.

According to FamilyHandyman.com, your washing machine filter should be cleaned as regularly as the lint trap on your dryer!

But, judging by the TikTok comments, it seems not many families are aware of this little maintenance fact!

‘We’re supposed to do WHAT???’

Thousands of parents and homeowners have flooded Edith’s comments with shock, confusion, and praise.

“Everyone frantically running to their washers!” one user laughed.

“There’s a filter? I’ve had my washer 12 years…” another user queried.

“We’re supposed to do WHAT???” exclaimed another user.

“Lived in my house 20 years, never did it,” one user wrote.

“Story of my life. ‘Supposed to do it monthly,’ find out eight years later,” laughed another user.

But some users were scared to head to their laundry rooms.

“I’m scared to open mine,” commented one user.

“I’m actually scared to run to my washer now,” echoed another.

But plenty of parents were thankful for Edith’s helpful exposé.

“Thank you so much. I did not know. I just did it for the first time in 7 years!!!” exclaimed one user.

Thanks to Edith’s alarming video, washing machines around the world will now be a little cleaner!
