Critically acclaimed video game sets new record for most BAFTA nominations

The Last of Us Part 2 has just set a new record for BAFTA nominations.

The PlayStation exclusive game is up for 13 different awards, as reported by Eurogamer. This makes Last of Us 2 the most nominated game in BAFTA history.

As the sequel to Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part 2 was riding on high hopes. Did it deserve the 13 BAFTA nominations? Well, the game was a hit with critics but fans were left sharply divided.

Long-time players questioned some of the twists in the game, particularly regarding the two stars of the series, Joel and Ellie. The Last of Us series takes place in a post-apocalyptic America where pockets of civilization have managed to survive in a zombie-infested landscape. The surrogate father-daughter duo develop a strong bond with each on their quest in the world beyond.

In The Last of Us Part 2, Joel’s story took a turn for the worse and culminated in an ending that left many players baffled. However, writing concerns aside, most players agreed that the game was a technical marvel that was also wonderfully acted.

2020 was a big year in video games, although it wasn’t all good. The highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 had a disastrous launch which resulted in the PlayStation 4 version of the game being removed from the Sony store, as well as legal issues and widespread criticism.

But there was also Hades, the indie action RPG from Supergiant Games that has been hailed as a masterpiece in game design. Ghost of Tsushima was also a brand new IP that garnered praise for being a loving homage to Akira Kurosawa and its dramatic portrayal of the Mongol invasion of Japan.

The 2021 BAFTA Game Awards will air on March 25, exclusively online.
