Know Your Gamer: Anthony “ImpressioN” Lim
Hey there! I’m Anthony Lim, more commonly known by my online moniker; ImpressioN.
I am a professional CS:GO player from Singapore currently playing for Chinese esports club BTRG as the in-game leader. I also stream at Twitch.tv during my free time when I’m not practising or playing tournaments.
On getting started in the professional scene...
I actually first had my interaction with a PC at the tender age of 5 at a local LAN shop near my house where I stayed. Counter-Strike 1.3 (CS) was the first PC game I’ve ever played and honestly one of my earliest memories as a kid was when I was playing my first ever PC game tournament; we were competing at that time I believe was CS 1.6, I was crowned the MVP despite losing and was only 7 at the time.
After that moment it became clear to me what I wanted, I aspired from that point on to be a professional gamer, to travel the world, see new places and meet new people all the while honing my craft, becoming better at what I do. The exhilaration of winning something and being rewarded for your time and effort spent on it I think applies to anybody with a competitive nature like myself.
When I was 13 I joined a clan "[Bf.Nut]"(they've now rebranded as "Nut" - No Use Talking), first playing Blackshot then moving onto Battlefield and played about 3 years of competitive League of Legends where my biggest achievements was some podium finishes locally and also getting the top placement on the ladder ranking system.
When I was 17, I rediscovered CS by playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive with my elder sister. It didn't take me long to decide to pursue CS:GO competitively.
I played with a couple of teams and after about 2 years I earned a spot on the best team in Singapore, following the disbandment of my own team due to some members needing to enlist for their national service.
It was when I was 20, fresh out of the army, that I attended ROG Masters 2016 with dream[S]cape. We caught the eye of Chinese esports club BOOT after placing 1st runner-up and defeating some really strong opposition, including some professional teams and were offered a contract as a semi-professional team.
I think if I recall correctly, my first salary was something like S$800 a month.
After more time and hard work I'm currently a full-time professional player for BTRG. So despite having played competitively for almost 12 years and having made the goal of becoming a professional gamer at the age of 7. I've only played professionally for 4 years out of my 12 years competing and only reached my goal of becoming a professional (albeit semi-pro) gamer after 13 years of effort.
On his most memorable moment...
I think honestly there are too many moments to mention, be it qualifying for a big LAN event, playing good at regional events or even facing some of the world's best at international events.
I guess one of the memorable ones recently was at the WESG SEA finals in Kuala Lumpur last year (2019).
We basically beat two of the tournament favourites in semis and grand finals to get the championship. LAN events are amazing and recently the lack of them due to the pandemic is really saddening.
On his favourite gear...
This honestly depends a lot on which company is making the best gear at the time but right now I guess in no particular order my favourites would be the following;
Sennheiser - always good quality audio, never disappoints
Razer - good build and aesthetics. Also, their wireless technology at the moment is really top notch. I personally am using the Viper Ultimate and am really impressed with it overall.
Logitech - good wireless tech as well and (they are) really improving in their audio game as well as keyboards. They really listen to professional gamers a lot regarding their feedback, so every time there's a new release you know it's gonna be good stuff.
ZOWIE Benq - one of the most solid and stable companies, their monitors are hands down the best and mice selection is great for anybody starting out gaming as they've a huge variety of models for people with different hand sizes and grip styles.
Artisan mousepad - honestly every Artisan mousepad that I've bought is just carefully and intricately pieced together and they're so much more durable than other mousepads I've tried. The QC is amazing from them and I definitely love it.
Special mentions to Xtrfy and Ducky for their gear as well.
Since all these companies specialise in different peripherals there's no ranking whatsoever. It's basically just my favourite companies at the moment.
On what other gear he’d like to have...
I would love to try out all the flagship mice of all the companies in the world. I personally am very into peripherals and perhaps in the future would like to do mouse reviews or gear reviews.
It doesn't matter to me what type of gaming gear because I would honestly love to have it!
On his industry idol...
Finn "karrigan" Andersen from mousesports is someone I look up to.
He's a diligent, hardworking and smart player that sometimes just happens to be really unlucky and despite all of that he has achieved so much and is so successful. I aspire to one day achieve more than him and if the world allows, I really wish to play against him and win.
Also I really quite like iceiceice, he's my local industry idol (notice me senpai)
