Dota 2 to get new hero, update in mid-December
Dota 2 publisher Valve Corporation has announced that it will be releasing a long-awaited new hero alongside a new gameplay update (7.28) some time in mid-December.
Valve revealed the upcoming new content to the game in a post on the official Dota 2 blog. The publisher previously announced in October that it would be releasing a new hero at the end of this month and another in the first quarter of next year.
While the company has not revealed the cause for the delay, it did reveal that the new hero is female, adding that “she needs a bit more time to cosy up for the winter”.
The last two heroes to be added to Dota 2, Snapfire and Void Spirit, were released alongside the 7.24 gameplay update back in January. With the upcoming addition of this new female hero, Dota 2’s hero roster will grow to 120.
Meanwhile, the last major gameplay update for Dota 2, version 7.27, was released on 28 June, with the latest patch, 7.27d, added on 26 August.
New Ranked Season updates
In addition to the upcoming new hero and gameplay update, Valve also revealed that the new Ranked season, starting on 1 December, will feature a seasonal quest reset and treasure, as well as improvements to Dota 2’s smurf and booster account detection system.
The publisher also gave an update on the implementation of a new ‘Overwatch’ player behaviour regulation system being introduced to the game.
“When fully implemented, this tool will allow users to review suspicious matches and help identify bad actors, in addition to our existing systems,” Valve said.
The Overwatch system was first implemented by Valve in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which allowed the game’s community to regulate itself by assigning certain members of the community to review reports of disruptive behaviour, determine whether such reports were valid, and apply punishments and bans when appropriate.
These new additions should significantly improve the playing experience for players in Dota 2’s Ranked Matchmaking, which has long been plagued by toxic players, smurfs, and booster accounts.
The new Ranked Season is set to run for the next six months.
