British woman found after going missing in remote Brazilian forest

A British woman reported missing in a remote part of Brazil has been found safe and well.

Katherine Brewster went missing last Sunday after reportedly going for a walk in a remote wooded area to meditate.

The 27-year-old, who is originally from Sussex, had apparently not been seen since leaving the village of Dom Jose in the southern area of Alpestre but has now been found.

Her mother Dr Diane Brewster told the BBC her daughter had wanted “time alone”.

UniPermacultura Dom Jose, a permaculture commune popular with backpackers, shared pictures of Miss Brewster on Facebook, saying she had been found after a search.

It was initially suggested the British national was staying at the commune, but staff said she was never a guest there and had been staying with a couple in a nearby village.

In its Facebook post, UniPermacultura wrote: “Katharine went out to make a trail alone, on a rainy day without telling the couple who hosted her on Sunday and disappeared.”

A search found the 27-year-old, it said, adding: “She was hurt, and she couldn’t walk, and she had to be loaded on her back.

“It was an exciting moment for everyone, after all, she was 5 days missing, and if she wasn’t found, she could come to death. Happy ending!”
