An alleged armed robbery took place at Block 301 Ubi Ave 1, said The Singapore Police Force on Tuesday (1 August).

According to the police, the incident was reported at 10.50am. The suspect, who police say was male, was armed with a knife.

He forced the lone staff member in the Western Union money transfer branch to hand over more than S$2,000. The suspect – clad in a white helmet, black jacket and dark long pants – fled on foot, police say.

The Western Union staff member was alone in the shop at the time, and was not injured.

The landlord of the unit, who wanted to be known as Mr Liu and who lives directly above the Western Union, told Yahoo News Singapore that he was nearby at the time of the incident. He heard the female staff member shouting “help me” and that she was definitely scared.

Investigations are ongoing. Anybody with information relating to the incident can call the police at 1800-255-0000.

Two armed robberies in two days

This is the second armed robbery in Singapore in as many days. On Monday (31 July), a 48-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of armed robbery at a Shell petrol station along Upper Bukit Timah on Monday.

At about 12.50pm yesterday, a staff of the petrol station reported that the petrol station had been robbed, police said.

Armed with a knife, the suspect allegedly ordered the petrol station staff to put cash from the cash register in a plastic bag. He then fled with more than S$1,000 on a motor scooter that had a masked licence plate.

The suspect was arrested about four hours later at 4.50pm along Jurong East St 21. Cash amounting to S$499, bank receipts and the scooter were seized as evidence.

According to Senior Assistant Commissioner Gerald Lim, commander of the Clementi Police Division, there has not been a case of a similar nature in the past 10 years.
