27 weeks' jail for man who uploaded ex-girlfriend's sex videos
SINGAPORE — Angered that his ex-girlfriend refused to meet him after their breakup, a man posted her compromising videos on Facebook as revenge.
The 32-year-old Bangladeshi man then threatened to upload a sex video of her daily if she still refused to meet him.
The construction worker was jailed for 27 weeks on Wednesday (22 September) after he pleaded guilty to one count each of distributing an intimate recording of the woman, and threatening to do so. Another two charges of a similar nature were taken into consideration for his sentencing.
Both parties cannot be named due to a gag order.
The man met the victim, a 33-year-old domestic helper, some five years ago in Singapore and the pair began dating. She broke up with him in January last year as she was due to get married in Indonesia in 2022.
While dating, the couple had sex, which the man recorded on two occasions. The woman was aware of the recordings and asked him to delete the videos. Despite promising to remove them, the man kept them for his viewing pleasure. The woman trusted him to delete the videos and did not check his handphone.
After the victim broke up with him, she ceased contact with him. The man then demanded that the victim return him money and a ring he had given to her. She met the man at an HDB block in Bedok to return the ring.
While at the meet-up point, the man pointed to a storeroom and asked the victim to go in. The woman refused and tried to leave. The man told her that he still had her sex videos and would upload them on Facebook if she did not listen to him, but the woman ignored him.
“The accused was angry and wanted to intimidate the victim into complying with his wishes,” said DPP Delicia Tan. He created an account on Facebook and uploaded the victim’s photos. He added people from the victim’s “friends list” to the fake account and kept the profile publicly accessible.
On 10 January, he uploaded videos of himself having sex with the woman on the Facebook account with the caption, “Today my boyfriend ***k very nice”, “Best sex with my boyfriend”, “After ***k today, so happy” and “Before ***k with boyfriend”.
He used his handphone to take screenshots of the videos before deleting the videos from Facebook. The man then sent a link to the account to the victim, telling her that he had uploaded the sex videos. He threatened to upload one sex video a day if she continued refusing to meet him.
The woman informed her employer of the matter and was advised to lodge a police report on her next off day. She lodged a police report on 17 January, leading to the man’s arrest on 21 January.
In mitigation, the unrepresented man said through an interpreter that he was “very sorry and remorseful” for the offence.
“I am sole breadwinner that’s why I came to Singapore to work. My father recently got a heart attack and he needs my monetary support for his treatment,” he added.
He asked District Judge John Ng to give him “a chance to work in Singapore” after his sentence, and a light sentence.
However the judge said that it was not up to the court to decide on his work status.
